Their legacy consists of groundbreaking material eruptions and their aftermath, composed in this visually stunning collage
Narrative
Maurice and Katia Krafft dedicated their lives to the study of the world’s volcanoes.

Werner Herzog made this documentary not a biography, but a celebration and presentation of the work of a French couple famous for their pioneering volcano photography, a dangerous boat that ultimately cost them their lives
It’s delightfully low-key: we see snippets of their (still great) work alongside little bits of random footage from the filmmakers themselves, while Herzog gives us a quiet commentary from a fan rather than an expert perspective (although he obviously knows something he’s talking about).
It may sound boring and pedestrian, but the stunning images will hold you and make you admire those who dared to shoot them
If there’s a tragic dimension to it (did they keep taking risks because that’s what they ended up doing), Herzog doesn’t think about it.
